Dum Spiro Spero is moving forward through a partnership between Dr. Oscar Lovelace, former Republican candidate for Governor, various Republican and Democratic members of the South Carolina General Assembly, and other non-profit advocacy organizations with complementary issue-based campaigns. 

Dum Spiro Spero, which means "While I breathe, I hope..." was selected as the state motto by the Provincial Congress of South Carolina on March 26, 1776.

The phrase also appears on the official great seal of South Carolina.
